Is there enough evidence to support the positive birth movement?
A positive birth can have different meanings but most importantly is described as a woman having access to accurate information, feel respected and in control, powerful and free.
A birth that she later remember with warmth and pride.
A positive birth does not have to be 'natural' or 'drug-free'. Not even at home or in a "home alike environment "– The birthing woman needs to feel listened and supported.
"You can birth with positivity in hospital or at home, with or without medical intervention. You can have a positive caesarean or a positive home water birth. Positive birth is about approaching birth realistically, having genuine choice, and feeling empowered by your experience." - The Positive Birth Movement
As a Birth Supporter and mum, I believe that communication is one of the most important aspects before birth. Being able to talk openly to your caregivers and share your birth preferences is essential, and it is going to help you to make informed decisions.
Some studies showed that "women related their positive birth experience to internal factors, such as their ability and strength, as well as external factors, such as a trustful and respectful relationship with the midwife.
Around the world, approximately 30% of women describe their experience of childbirth as traumatic. Numbers can get much higher as some woman doesn't even understand that they suffered birth trauma, as at first they just think tat is how birth is.
It doesn't have to be this way. Research conducted by midwives suggests that how you are treated, who is with you, and how involved you are in decisions during labour could be the most critical factors in preventing birth trauma. So whether you a planning an elective caesarean, hospital or home birth, few things can help you to have a positive outcome.
When I teach Hypnobirthing Australia, I always like to emphasize the four key ingredients for a positive birth experience:
These four keys ingredients come together beautifully and not only help mums to be to have the birth they desire but also prepares their birth partners as they feel they also have an outstanding job ahead.
